The moment I looked into the frightened eyes of the parents who’s tiny baby was in need of the ventilator I was wheeling into the NICU I was forever changed.
I was 21 yrs old working for a medical equipment rental company delivering, testing, and servicing all types of medical devices. This particular day I was delivering a Servo 300 that was needed urgently. Being pressed for time the RT staff asked me to get there as fast as I possibly could. Upon arrival the vent still needed a checkout and O2 calibration. With time being of the essence I was asked to use one of the open NICU rooms. As I entered I wheeled the vent right past a couple who were clutching each other knowing that the equipment I was rolling past them was for their baby.
I had done hundreds of deliveries and even more calibration checkouts but today was different because I had actually seen the family who’s precious baby was fighting for survival. With each beep and alarm as I went through the procedure carefully calibrating the O2 sensor I said quiet prayer. I hoped that I looked calm on the outside but my insides were freaking out. My reality of working on this type of equipment changed in that moment. No longer did I see a box of circuits or electronics. From that moment on I would see the people these devices are helping and truly understand the term “LifeSupport” equipment.
Ventilators alone can’t save lives but they are an incredible tool in the hands of skilled caregivers.
For 22 years now I have had the pleasure and passion of helping thousands of patients through partnering with the most amazing people on the front line of our healthcare systems.
I will continue to search for new innovations that have a positive impact on patient outcomes because the people we love are the ones who someday will need these amazing tools.
